Do you?
My reply to the above question would have to be a sad, “I used to.” Said with a heavy sigh. It’s been a while since I have.
When my husband and I lived in a major US city, I was blessed enough to have a local library within walking distance of our home. I would often stroll over there to check out novels–usually murder mysteries written by authors like Patricia Cornwell and Janet Evanovich. At that time, I took public transportation to my workplace, and would bury my nose and get lost in my library book during the train ride into downtown.
Besides during my commute, I loved to read while I was on vacation at the beach. I would devour a novel while sitting on my beach chair with my toes in the sand (although sometimes the beach breeze made holding the pages steady difficult).
In 2010 we moved to the small city in which we currently live. While I love it here, the one thing I lament about it the most is the fact that its libraries aren’t nearly as accessible. In the downtown area, there is a huge, beautiful library full of wonderful materials, but to get there, I must either walk (far) or park in a garage–and parking garages are not my friends (especially not the friends of the rear view mirrors of my car). Even if the library validates my parking for two hours (which it does), the parking situation is too stressful for my comfort.
There is also a new library in the small town adjacent to the city, but I have attempted to drive there and can never find it. It’s one of those places that are hidden.
What a crying shame.
I want to start reading for pleasure again.
When the huge city library opens up for in-person service again (on June 1 according to the county website), I plan to walk down there and check out a book. I’m behind on Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series, and I would love to see what Kay Scarpetta is doing lately.
What do you like to read for pleasure?
